Blue Mountains

Just west of Sydney, the World Heritage–listed Blue Mountains form part of Australia’s Great Dividing Range, rising as a broad sandstone plateau that reaches more than 1,100 metres above sea level. The Blue Mountains are a spectacular national park right on the city’s doorstep, perfect for escaping to nature in Sydney. The landscape is shaped by sheer cliff lines and deep, forested valleys, where massive sandstone walls drop into the Jamison and Grose valleys below. More than 140 kilometres of walking trails run through the park, many involving steep descents from the escarpment into cooler, shaded valley floors.

Along the way, you’ll encounter some of the most impressive Blue Mountains waterfalls, as well as a plethora of epic lookouts that open onto layered ridgelines and wide valley views. Birdlife is abundant, and other native wildlife is often easier to notice once you move away from the busiest tracks. Many parts of the park are also easy to reach without a car, which makes exploring the Blue Mountains by train a practical and convenient way to experience its walks, waterfalls, and viewpoints.
